A healthy and balanced lifestyle is the result of sufficient exercise, balanced nutrition and proper rest. However, for one reason or another, most people struggle to include these practices in their daily lives, and statistics show more than 97 percent of Americans are living an unhealthy and unbalanced lifestyle.

In today’s article, we’ve outlined five effective habits you can add in your lifestyle to enjoy good health and well-being.

Buy Fresh Food

Buying fresh fruit, vegetables and meat is by far the best way to fill your kitchen cupboards, fridge and freezer. Frozen and instant meals are usually packed with sugar, salt, additives and chemicals that are proven to be unhealthy and harmful to our bodies and mental health.

A lot of people are now using meal-planning apps that can scan products and instantly tell you if they’re healthy or not. This makes life a lot easier, as you don’t have to go through the entire label of ingredients or squint to read the fine print. The app will automatically bring to light what’s good or bad about a product. However, using meal planning apps usually requires the user to enter personal information for their health goals, so it’s recommended you use a secure network proxy service when accessing these apps in public.

Cook Your Own Meals

Cooking your own meals puts you in control of what goes into them. If you don’t want to eat too much salt, sugar or any other ingredients that could possibly be put in your dish, prepare your own food so that you can control amounts and the overall contents.

When we eat out, we can try to choose the healthiest options on the menu, but we never really know what goes into the food, how fresh it is and how it’s been prepared. Try to cook your own meals as often as possible so that you don’t ingest potentially harmful ingredients.

If you’re too busy to cook all your meals, consider batch cooking. This is where you prepare large quantities of a meal at one time so that you can take homemade food with you anywhere. It takes a little extra time, but can actually be quite fun and is a great way to ensure healthy eating when you’re pressed for time.

Set Diet and Exercise Goals

If we don’t set health-orientated goals, we don’t have anything to work towards. This aimless way of protecting our health induces mistakes, usually in the form of overeating or not eating enough, both of which lead to poor overall health. Know what weight you want to be, what ingredients you want to eat, what exercises you wish to do and have a routine to follow.

Routines become habitual, so after a short period of time working with your exercise plans and chosen diet, you’ll find you automatically align your activity and actions with them.

Set small goals when you first start out with a new routine. Don’t worry about exercising every day, but rather making sure you exercise today. Tomorrow worry about exercising tomorrow and so on. Before you know it, these additions to your routine will become second nature and healthy living will become automatic.

Drink More Water

Drinking enough water is essential to maintaining healthy hydration. When we become dehydrated, our focus is off, and we start to make mistakes. Driving becomes dangerous, our work suffers and our reflexes aren’t as sharp as they should be. Make a habit out of carrying a bottle of water with you wherever you go so that you never fall victim to dehydration.

It is recommended to drink three liters of water each day. Set water-drinking goals just like you would for anything else. One liter before lunch, another before dinner and one more before bed is a good example. This will train you to hydrate and help you adapt this all-important habit

Get Enough Sleep

People are always complaining about their lack of sleep. Whether their bed is uncomfortable or they didn’t get to bed until late, they don’t seem to do much to fix their sleep issues. If you find that you struggle to sleep, try a new mattress, pillow set, or go to bed at a reasonable hour.

One thing to avoid is screen time before bed. Seeing the brightness from a screen tricks your brain into thinking it’s daytime, and this affects your sleep. If you like to unwind before bed, instead of watching T.V., consider reading a book or a magazine. This tires your eyes out and will help you get to sleep faster.

Overall, through introducing these five habits into your life, you can dramatically change your health. Eating and drinking properly, sleeping for eight hours a night, exercising and sourcing fresh food should be a part of everyone’s lifestyle. They are small adjustments that will have a big impact on your health and overall well-being.
