Irradiated Food Kills Cats - But It’s Ok For Us?
I’ve just been reading an article on the Sydney Morning Herald. I got on there while trying to find out if my garlic that I bought last night (imported from the USA) is irradiated. The Chinese stuff is. I avoid it and you probably should too if you value your health!
From what I can see the US stuff probably isn’t, but is possibly sprayed with some other nasty shit before being imported - so hey that’s not so bad then!
Anyway, back to my story. Apparently the Australian minister for agriculture at the time, Tony Burke, banned irradiated cat food after 30 cats died and another 60 became ill with neurological disorders after being fed irradiated cat food imported from Canada.
The connection was picked up by a Sydney vet. The numbers would quite possibly have been a lot higher as these are obviously the only ones they know about.
It is unknown why the problem is so obvious with cats, but is it not common sense, that if irradiated food can have the serious and very obvious effects on cats, then it is very likely to be having detrimental effects on humans also?
Perhaps the effects are more obvious in cats because their diet very likely only contained the one food, whereas we consume a variety of foods as well as any irradiated foods we might be unlucky enough to unknowingly consume.
At the very least all irradiated foods should be labelled accordingly, preferably irradiation of foods should be banned completely (along with GE foods).
I find it interesting that many large companies have no concern about selling these foods. Woolworths for example, seem to have no concerns with either GE foods or irradiated foods. I reckon they should change their jingle from ‘Woolworths the fresh food people’ to ‘Woolworths the Genetically Engineered and Irradiated food people’. It would be a much more accurate portrayal.
Anyway, watch out Kiwi’s - the irradiated Mango’s from North Queensland will be back on your shelves this year no doubt! If you’re tempted, just remember the cats………
